From a lucky son-in-law

On Earth, the hardest thing’s the purest too;
an ancient force has made it what it is
from humble carbon bits: so very few
in circumstances rare become like this.

To see this thing you need another thing: 
soft light, that it transforms to brilliant fire;
kind light, that makes it suited for a king,
a pairing to behold and to admire.

The way that one so complements the other
reminds me of a couple that I know:
a country lady, queen of the Pavlova,
a gentleman whose farm is his chateau.

Today we mark their sixty years together
glad as we are that diamonds are forever
